The department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology deals with imparting basic knowledge of Anatomy, Histology, Pathology and Microbiology of structures and tissues related to the para-oral and oral areas.

The department is catering to diagnostic services for all the departments in the college as well as from outside with frequent referrals. Apart from histopathologic reports, routine blood examination and microbiological studies are also undertaken.

An exclusive Oral Pathology Museum has been created with adequate hard and soft tissue specimens along with clinical and microscopic details of pathologies for students and visitors to understand about the subject at a glance. There are four Laboratories in the department for routine histopathology, undergraduate practicals, clinical examinations and post graduate studies.
 
Cancer research lab and tobacco cessation centre

The centre was established in April 2013 in collaboration with Roko cancer, an NGO working to create awareness among people about the prevention, detection and cure of cancer. It is intended to facilitate in:
  • Early Screening of Oral Cancer.
  • Patient Motivation and Counselling for Tobacco Cessation.
The department is fully equipped with an antigen retrieval microwave oven and Semiautomatic microtome for carrying out advanced diagnostic methods like immunohistochemical labelling and molecular level detection of diseases.

Specialization in this field is a three-year course awarding Masters Degree.
Actively engaged in research in the field of Oral Cancer and Exfoliative Cytology. 
Training the post graduates in short term research projects, presenting papers, and writing publications. 
Doing regular online discussions with eminent oral & general pathologists from various universities.

  • Immunohistochemical analysis of Ki67, EGFR and survivin in epithelial odontogenic lesions
  • Comparison of rugae pattern between dentate and edentulous patients.
  • Analysis of histopathology of dental caries.

  • Recent Advaces in Diagnosis of Potentially Malignant Disorders
  • Prevalence of Tobacco related oral lesions in truck drivers and helpers in North-Western Indian region.
  • Epidemiological study on Epithelial Aero digestive Cancer in collaboration with Dr AthanasiosZavras& Dr MandeepVirk (USA).
  • Survey on screening of oral cancer in Malwa belt under collaboration by roko cancer – an endeavor for early detection of cancer.
 
Equipments

  • The department has been constantly upgrading the equipments and is currently equipped with: Nikon research microscopewith CCTV attachment, LCD and teaching aid for slide discussions, Stereomicroscope and Colorimeter.
